Happy 13th Birthday Hannah Banana
So Hannah turned 13th on Tuesday of this week. However, she did not awake to the normal Kenney birthday fanfare. That would have to wait a day, and even then, it was not the "usual" Kenney birthday celebration. On her actual birthday, Hannah was too busy to celebrate. She was, shall we say, "indisposed". Basically, she spent 48 hours with the worst stomach flu she has ever had. It was so bad, we decided that we should postpone her birthday celebration. Food is a big part of the tradition...breakfast and gifts followed by lunch out with Dad.... concluding with your favorite birthday dinner and an over the top decadent birthday cake. Only, Hannah could not eat, much less even look at food. We thought we might continue with the house full of decorations and gifts part, but considering Hannah could not get out of bed....we opted to just postpone everything. So on Wednesday she awoke to her usual birthday fanfare...well almost. We had managed to decorate and wrap gifts and make the cake and prepare the chicken yummy casserole for dinner.....but in the meantime Rachel and I had also managed to receive a gift from Hannah. So while I made it out of bed long enough to watch her open her presents, have her breakfast and see Emma sing Happy Birthday in sign language....that was pretty much it for the day. Dinner was just Hannah, Matt and Emma with a cameo appearance by Rachel and I to sing happy birthday and watch her blow out the candles. So instead of celebrating her 13th birthday all day... Hannah spent the day taking care of Rachel and me while we were "indisposed"......Hannah is usually like that. She is more worried about all of us than she is about herself. These are some other things I think of when I think of Hannah.
1. The fact that she loves to read books out loud to Emma after school (in fact, she gets more excited than Emma to see what Em has brought home from Library Day at school)
2. The fact that she unloaded the dishwasher and told me to go to bed when we were supposed to be celebrating "her day".
3. The fact that she enjoys riding bikes and skating outside with her sister (even if it does usually turn in to a dangerous escapade involving a trip to the ER).
4. The fact that her favorite CD is the Little Mermaid soundtrack and that she sings from it on most days while getting her home school work done.
5. The fact that she loves to go hiking and really appreciates and notices nature.
6. The fact that she collects stamps.
I could, of course, go on and on with my list. I am hoping though, that the list will remind Hannah of how much she is loved and appreciated and not how much her birthday celebration stank.
