Just like old times.....
For as long as I can remember we have spent Halloween with our wonderful friends Davie, Kelly, Sydney and Thomas. We would have a soup dinner together at our house, before heading out to trick or treat with the kids. Afterwords, we would come back to our house and hang out, while all of the kids went through their candy. Thomas and Sydney loved being able to help the girls try to stuff as much of their candy into a small Ziploc bag as they could. (I have a 1 bag rule around here for Halloween candy) Last year, however, we decided that we would not spend the holiday together. Syd and Thomas, as well as Rachel and Hannah, were getting older and trick or treating seemed like it would be a thing of the past for them. So our family spent Halloween alone. The girls all dressed up and went trick or treating, but it just wasn't the same. I think we all felt a little sad at the passing of time and the ending of traditions. So when Halloween came around this year, we assumed that we would do the same thing as last year. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from the Salas family saying that they wanted to reinstate our tradition. Sydney had decided that it wasn't fair that Emma did not get to be a part of the tradition for as long as they had. Last night the whole Salas family came over for soup followed by trick or treating. Rachel and Thomas decided not to dress up. Sydney decided to wear a costume but chose not to trick or treat. She felt that at 16, it would be weird. But we all trekked around the neighborhood together so that Emma could enjoy our tradition just a little bit longer. It is really hard to acknowledge that things have changed or that we must move on from something we love......I have never really been that into Halloween...... it is the time spent with my friends and their kids , whom I care so much about, that means the most to me. I am glad that the Salas family let me hold off on moving on and growing up this year. Last night felt just like old times and that was a good feeling. Happy Halloween!
